Giving commands

There are several ways to express a command, depending on the use of an adjective or a verb.

  • Use of adjective + 一点:

一点Quick!

高兴一点Cheer up!

一点,慢一点Slowly, slowly!

  • Repetition of the verb:

抬抬手臂。Raise your arms.

伸伸腿。Stretch your legs.

休息休息Take a break.

检查检查Have a check.

Note that if the verb is actually a verbal phrase, i.e. composed of a verb and an object,

e.g. 太阳 to go in the sunshine (lit. to have some sunbathing), then only the verb itself is repeated: 晒晒太阳 Go in the sunshine (lit. Have some sunbathing).

  • Use of the verb + 一下:

一下血。Stop the bleeding.

好好休息一下Have a good rest.

补充一下维生素。Supplement your diet with some vitamins.

  • Use of the verb + + verb (for one-syllable/character verbs):

看。Take/Have a look.

尝。Have a taste.

走。Take a walk.

  • Use of at the end of the sentence to soften the command into a suggestion:

看一下Take/Have a look.

检查一下Have a check.

好好休息一下Have a good rest.

  • Use of the verbal phrase on its own, usually with the subject 'you' omitted:

坐在这里。Sit here.

现在就去。Go there now.

帮我请个假。Ask for some leave for me.

  • Use of the negative forms or 不要 + the verb:

担心。Don't worry.

紧张。Don't be nervous.

不要一边下楼一边发短信。Don't send texts while using the stairs.
