Professor Jane Millar will be working with the Social Policy Association and the ESRC Grant Assessment Panel in two new appointments.

The Social Policy Association is the professional association for academics, researchers and students in social policy. It was founded in 1967 and has a large membership in the UK and, increasingly, internationally. Its aims are to promote social policy as an academic discipline, represents its members’ interests as well as to enhance the communication and learning between its members, policy-makers and the public.

Jane has also been appointed as Chair of one of the three interdisciplinary Grant Assessment Panels of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The role of the Panels is to appraise and classify proposals submitted under the responsive mode schemes. As Panel Chair, Jane will represent the Panel recommendations to the ESRC Grants Delivery Group.

Speaking about these appointments, Jane said: ‘These are two exciting and challenging roles. As a learned society, the Social Policy Association is the main voice for my academic discipline and it is an honour to be elected as Chair. Over the next three years we will be seeking to enhance the benefits of membership, to develop our already strong international links further, and to promote the social and economic impact of our research.

‘As chair of an ESRC Grant Assessment Panel, I will have an opportunity to support responsive mode funding, and to help make the case for a strong social science research base, in the changing Research Council environment.’

Jane was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Bath between 2008 to 2015.
