            <p id="isPasted"><strong><span style="font-size: 30px;">About the role</span></strong></p><p>An exciting opportunity is available for a research assistant to join a collaborative project investigating the molecular mechanisms of temperature sensing in ion channels, with a focus on the TRPM8 channel.</p><p>The position is part of a Human Frontier Science Program award: &ldquo;<a href="https://www.hfsp.org/sites/default/files/195x265_Grant%20Award%20Booklet_2024_7.pdf">Understanding the molecular basis of animal cold thermosensation</a>&rdquo;&nbsp;</p><p>The project aims to understand how thermosensitive ion channels detect and respond to cold temperatures across species adapted to very different thermal environments. In particular, we investigate how evolutionary changes in ion channel proteins may influence their temperature-dependent behaviour, including comparisons between extinct species such as the woolly mammoth and their closest living relatives, such as the Asian elephant.</p><p>The research uses molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of ion channels, together with analysis and interpretation of simulation data, to investigate how thermosensitive ion channels respond to temperature changes across different species.</p><p>The project is a collaboration with leading experimental researchers in structural biology, electrophysiology, and evolutionary biology.</p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 30px;">About you</span></strong></p><ul type="disc"><li>Hold (or be close to completing) a degree in a relevant discipline such as Chemistry, Physics, Biological Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.</li><li>Have experience with programming, preferably in Python, and an interest in developing computational skills further.</li><li>Be comfortable working with data analysis and scientific computing.</li><li>Have some familiarity with computational or quantitative approaches applied to physical or biological systems (e.g. modelling, simulations, or data-driven research).</li><li>Be willing to learn and apply computational methods to problems in biophysics, particularly related to membrane proteins.</li><li>Have good problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.</li><li>Be willing to undertake occasional travel (typically once or twice per year) to attend consortium meetings with project partners.</li></ul><p><strong>Desirable (but not essential)</strong></p><ul type="disc"><li>Experience with molecular simulations, modelling, or related computational techniques.</li><li>Familiarity with Unix/Linux environments or high-performance computing.</li><li>Exposure to relevant software tools (e.g. molecular dynamics packages or data analysis libraries).</li></ul><p><strong><span style="font-size: 30px;">Further information</span></strong></p><p>As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.</p><p>This is a full time fixed term role (36.5 hours per week for 12 months) with an expected start date of October 2026.</p><p>For an informal discussion regarding the role please contact Professor Carmen Domene at mcdn20@bath.ac.uk.</p><p>We consider ourselves to be a university where difference is celebrated, respected and encouraged.             <h2 id="isPasted"><strong>About the role</strong></h2><p>Join our thriving <a href="https://www.bath.ac.uk/departments/department-of-chemistry/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Department of Chemistry</a> as a Lecturer in digital chemistry.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>You will develop an internationally leading independent research programme in the broad area of digital chemistry.</li><li>You will teach aspects of applied digital chemistry in both lectures and computational classes, more specialised units in the final year and contribute to our PGT course on Drug Discovery (joint with the department of Life Sciences), maintaining the University&rsquo;s high standards in teaching and learning, and its inclusive and supportive learning environment.&nbsp;</li><li>You will be supported to contribute at an appropriate level to the administration, leadership, and management of the Department&rsquo;s activities.&nbsp;</li></ul><h2><strong>About you</strong></h2><p>At Bath we offer an exceptional environment for research teaching and learning and we wish to support you in reaching your potential for internationally leading research, in the broad field of digital chemistry. We would be interested to hear from you if your research interests lie in digital chemistry in the widest sense (a non-exhaustive list):</p><ul><li>integration of AI/ML into chemistry (e.g. drug discovery, tailored synthesis, sustainable chemistry applications, virtual screening or digital retrosynthesis);</li><li>utilisation of automation and robotics to accelerate chemical discovery and optimisation;</li><li>application of data-centric approaches, including the use of &ldquo;big data&rdquo; and advanced simulation to allow more sustainable discovery of new materials, formulations and pharmaceuticals;</li><li>use AI/ML to accelerate more traditional computational workflows.</li></ul><p>If you could interact with and complementing (and enhance) existing research within the department this would be advantageous.</p><p>You should hold a PhD and be able to demonstrate the potential to develop an internationally leading research programme, to acquire significant funding from UK and international sources, and to produce high quality publications.</p><h2><strong>Application Requirements &amp; Selection Process:</strong></h2><p>Please provide both research and teaching statements of up to two pages for each in addition to a full CV.</p><p>Your research statement needs to outline your plans and intentions for research activity and grant capture over the coming five years. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership. The teaching vision should outline your areas of teaching expertise and a range of potential teaching subjects as well as course development interests. These are mandatory components of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.
