About the role

Working within the Library’s Science subject team, you will provide exemplary services as librarian for departments within the Faculty, currently as librarian for the Department of Life Sciences.

You will:

• have responsibility for the provision of library induction, information skills teaching, liaison, enquiry handling and the development of library collections, to support all library users within your subject areas.
• manage expenditure of the Library materials budgets for your areas, taking responsibility for decisions on purchase and subscription to the electronic and print materials required to support teaching, learning and research.
• Liaise with and build excellent professional relationships with staff and students in your departments, participating in appropriate department meetings, to gain a full understanding of their resource and service needs.
• work closely with the Science Faculty Librarian to ensure co-ordination of services and equity of provision across the Faculty, and work collaboratively with colleagues across the Library to provide and develop Library support.
• liaise with publishers and professional groups, to ensure you keep up to date with developments in resource provision and new publishing models, and obtain best value for money in purchases and subscriptions.

About the role

Reporting to the Scholarly Communications Librarian and working as part of the team you will be responsible for checking the quality of deposits in the University repository system (Pure) and ensuing that all metadata, copyright, licensing and attached files are accurate and that the deposit meets open access requirements before validating them for publication.

You will support research students and staff directly, helping them to navigate publication options to make their research work publicly available.  This means providing specialist advice about publisher terms and conditions (including copyright ownership and licensing rights), and gold or green routes to open access publishing.  You will help process article submissions through our publisher agreements, review requests for payment of publisher fees, liaise with publishers and help with the payment of invoices from our open access funds.

You will develop, maintain and record efficient and effective processes across all these workflows and help with system testing.  In addition, you will contribute towards training, the development and maintenance of guidance, and help on occasion with the supervision of Library Assistants, and work placement or internship students and staff.

There will be opportunities to contribute to initiatives across the wider Library Research Services Team and the broader Library.

About you

You should have these qualities:

• Proactive, with initiative and self-motivation.  You will have the ability to prioritise and self-manage, knowing when to refer to your manager
• Versatile and adaptable
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with colleagues in other teams and departments, sharing and promoting team goals and effective behaviours
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to contribute clearly to the development and maintenance of written guidance and processes
• Digitally literate and confident with M365 apps (Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams and SharePoint)
• Attention to detail and the ability to analyse and report on data for monitoring purposes
• Experience of cataloguing or metadata quality checking using a Library catalogue, repository or similar system
• Knowledge of copyright and open access publishing models

You will be a graduate of a Library or Information/Data Science degree, or have relevant equivalent qualification with experience of working in a Library or related environment and a clear commitment to attain Chartership or Fellowship with the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (or equivalent), if not yet awarded.
