Description: Aims:
As a conclusion to the programme, this unit aims to allow each student the opportunity to develop a design to their own brief as a vehicle to demonstrate the broad range of knowledge, ability and understanding which they have acquired during their graduate studies.

Learning Outcomes:
The ability to:
* produce coherent and well resolved architectural designs
* generate and systematically test, analyse and appraise design options, and draw conclusions which display methodological and theoretical rigour
* devise structural, constructional and environmental strategies for a complex building or group of buildings, employing integrative knowledge of:
-structural theories and construction techniques and processes
-the physical properties and characteristics of building materials and components and the environmental impact of specification choices
-climatic design, the relationship between climate, built form construction, life style, energy consumption, human well-being and the provision of building services
* select and use appropriate visual, verbal and written communication methods and appropriate media (including sketching, modelling, digital and electronic techniques) to represent the testing, analysis and critical appraisal of complex design proposals and their resolution to a range of professional and lay audiences
* Produce documentation and reports which are clear, analytical and logical covering a range of architectural issues of culture, theory and design
An understanding of the impact on design of the regulatory requirements, including the needs of the disabled, health and safety legislation and building regulations and development control, that guide the construction and occupation of buildings.

Skills:
The design skills necessary to resolve and integrate in elegant architectural propositions the multifarious requirements of a complex building.
Visual, verbal and written and communication skills.

Content:
The refinement of group and subsequent individual design briefs using material accumulated in Urban Design Studio 6.1 for one building type (public or residential) in one location within the established urban context. The design is to be presented through plans and sections, and supplemented by models (physical and/or computer models). The design will be developed with due regard to the technical requirements prevailing in the UK. Specialist expertise will be provided by visiting Architectural, Landscape, Environmental and Structural Engineering consultants.
