Description: Aims:
This unit aims to introduce ideas and concepts which have shaped European cities. It allows students to study an aspect of urban design in depth, and to present this material in written form. The dissertation takes the form of an academic piece of writing structured with a clear argument that reaches a balanced conclusion. The aim is also to introduce students to archival research and research methodologies.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who have completed this unit should be able to demonstrate their use of written English and communication skills to present their powers of reasoning and expression in relation to their research into the agreed topic.

Skills:
Independent research, clear writing and visual and oral presentation of the dissertation.

Content:
The dissertation is to be on a theme in the field of urban studies selected by the candidate and agreed to by the Director of Studies. It should relate to the ideas and ideals that have shaped European cities. It is to be written in English, have a maximum length of 6,000 words, and be illustrated as necessary. It is to be properly referenced following scholarly conventions, provided with a full bibliography and be bound. In addition the students are to prepare an associated presentation which will form part of the assessment.
