Description: Aims:
(to enable the students to)
* understand and support the care and learning of babies
* understand the importance of play in learning;
* identify symbolic behaviour;
* encourage babies and children to become independent and active learners;
* identify and examine early mark making;
* identify and examine early communication;
* promote and research the adult's role;
* explore the early childhood learning in the context of different theoretical perspectives;
* identify good practice and planning in order to create and maintain a safe and stimulating learning environment.

Learning Outcomes:
the student will be able to:
* identify symbolic behaviour and explain its place in development;
* identify the factors and create inclusive environments which encourage babies and children to be active and independent learners;
* monitor and assess children's learning and development
* report on children's achievements and inform parents and other agencies concerned with the well being of the child;
* demonstrate an understanding of and application of observations of babies' and children's play behaviour to the planning and delivery of an effective early years environment and programme.

Skills:
Observation, record keeping and relation of observations to children's development. Effective management of groups of children, activities and resources. Application of theory to practice, reflection, argument, applying knowledge to support problem solving and decision-making.

Content:
This unit will look in depth at the importance of play in learning, drawing on a variety of theorists and encouraging students to consider up to date research on early neurological development in relation to practice. Research and experience from outside the U.K. will be drawn on and explored. Students will be expected to apply new learning and understanding to the planning, management and organisation of an appropriate early years programme in order to meet the developing needs of babies and children in their setting or work place.
