Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to ensure that students:
* Demonstrate a range of skills, knowledge and understanding of youth work in practice;
* Learn introductory techniques and tools that are useful in practice;
* Evaluate and reflect on their practice;
* Understand the principles of professional youth work practice.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit students will have:
* Understood the importance of professional youth work practice;
* Shown that they understand the importance of evaluation and reflection both theoretically and practically;
* Undertaken an effective piece of youth work practice and be able to reflect on and evaluate how they have developed and changed over the previous year;
* Understood introductory techniques and tools, relevant to youth work, and used them in practice;
* Understood how to work with young people to develop effective youth work.

Skills:
During the unit students will gain the following skills:
* Intellectual (taught) - evaluative and reflective techniques
* Professional (facilitated, taught and assessed) - youth work techniques and tools, working habits, effective youth work, professional behaviour
* Practical (facilitated) - use of modern technology, report writing, recording techniques
* Key Skills (facilitated - assessed through other units) - the skills in this unit will assist students in the demonstration of competence in the common core modules and work undertaken in this module will be expected to contribute to their portfolios in those units.

* Evaluation of practice
* Reflective practice
* What is effective youth work
* Techniques and tools
* Report writing
* Involving young people
* Youth work democracy
* Self management and good working practice.
