Description: Aims:
To enable students to:
* Develop a coherent view of the curriculum;
* Recognise the value of a 'child-centred' environment;
* Understand the role play and exploration has in learning and development;
* Encourage and support children to become independent and active learners;
* Understand how active learning, creativity and critical thinking supports learning and development;
* Recognise the importance of a rich and varied learning environment;
* Ensure inclusion for all children;
* Understand the role of effective observation, planning and assessment in supporting children's learning;
* Develop a good working knowledge of the 6 areas of learning in the EYFS and/or knowledge, understanding and skills in literacy, maths and science in The National Curriculum and recognise the links between the two;
* Recognise the role of the adult in supporting and developing children's learning;
* Explore how theoretical perspectives underpin our understanding of how children learn;
* Become a reflective practitioner.

Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to:
* Evaluate the effectiveness of the learning environment;
* Identify the features of a 'child-centred' environment;
* Promote play and exploration for all children;
* Develop opportunities for creativity, critical thinking and active learning;
* Promote autonomy in learning;
* Ensure inclusion for all children;
* Observe, plan and evaluate effectively;
* Assess children's learning effectively;
* Develop and adapt their role supporting children's learning;
* Demonstrate an appropriate application of the requirements of the EYFS curriculum and/or the National curriculum in their setting;
* Recognise and demonstrate theory in practice;
* Reflect effectively on their role as a practitioner.

Content:
Exploring significant and emerging theories of how children develop and learn.
Developing a learning environment that supports these theories and promotes effective learning and development.
Developing appropriate observation skills leading to personalised planning and effective evaluation and assessment.
Exploring an appropriate curriculum that meets national and local requirements.
Inclusion issues.
The role of a reflective practitioner.
