Description: Aims:
This unit aims to:
* Build on students understanding of the theory, rationale and application of Cognitive Therapy in a range of settings;
* Review the evidence for effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural approaches with addicted populations;
* Explore the practice and application of Cognitive Therapy through demonstration and role play;
* Enable students to implement and integrate such models in their practice.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, students will be able to:
* Explain the key theoretical concepts underpinning Cognitive and Behavioural approaches;
* Understand of the relevance of Cognitive Therapy to their particular counselling setting;
* Demonstrate competence in the practical application of Cognitive Therapy derived interventions in an addictions setting;
* Evaluate their current competence in using these approaches and identify further training needs;
* Demonstrate an understanding of the key research evidence for the effectiveness of the model.

Skills:

* the use evidence-based counselling skills for this client group;
* applying appropriate interventions in order to assist clients maintain changes in addictive behaviours;
* formulating a treatment plan for a client using Cognitive and Behavioural approaches;
* evaluating research data related to current models of intervention for clients presenting with problems due to substance use;
* essay research, preparation and writing;
* the use of IT to find, communicate and manage information.

Content:
This unit is concerned with the development of the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques required for a Cognitive case formulation using for clients presenting with problems due to substance misuse. The skills necessary for a CT approach including structuring the session, agenda setting, Socratic questioning and various CT tools are taught at an introductory level. Supporting the practical element of this module is the associated research evidence which underpins the techniques used in the above processes. Students are shown how to use this information to inform and develop their clinical practice within the workplace.
