Description: Aims:
The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of condition monitoring concepts and techniques in a manufacturing environment. In addition students will be able to investigate and locate system faults. Consequently they will be able to identify the cause and effect of these faults using appropriate and systematic techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* Systematically analyse machine/plant breakdown and failure in manufacturing and production environments;
* evaluate a system for monitoring plant/machinery condition;
* locate, diagnose and remedy system faults from a range of information sources using appropriate analytical techniques;
* using evaluative techniques determine the nature of failure in a manufacturing system in terms of cause and effect.

During this unit students should gain the following skills:

Content:
This unit focuses on:
* Breakdown/Failure;
* Monitoring techniques/equipment;
* Analysis of data, use of strain gauges and software applications;
* Vibration, corrosion, crack detection, leakage, temperature monitoring;
* Standard procedures and documentation;
* Inspection and test;
* Fault location;
* Causes and effects of failure;
* Failure mode and effect analysis (FEMA), failure tree, cause and effect.
