Description: Aims:
Students undertaking this unit will examine and analyse the ethical considerations posed through a range of contemporary issues in sport to allow students to assess the role of the coach/leader in welfare issues in relation to sports participation.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
* develop an understanding of emerging issues and pressures experienced by the coach and support staff;
* identify the key issues contributing to ethical practice;
* analyse and apply the key social theories that underpin ethical practice;
* recognise the impact of ethical practice within the sports performance context.

Content:

* Critical evaluation of sport (competing theoretical perspectives)
* Impact of sport on social and moral development
* Drugs in sport, including the ethical implications of drug testing,
* Deviant behaviour in sport
* Ethical practice (codes of conduct; codes of ethics)
* Professionalism vs. amateur, funding, media and role model status;
* Pressures of success, under achievement and the impact it has on ethical practice.
