| Description: | Aims: To introduce students to some of the key periods in Italian cultural history. To study the emergence of the Neorealist movement in Italian cinema and narrative and to analyse its political and social significance. To familiarise students with some basic concepts of narrative in film and literature. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit students will be able to: * understand the significance of the Renaissance for Italian culture; * understand the importance of Neorealism in Italian post-war film; * discuss critically two key films of the Neorealist movement. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit. Content: The artistic and intellectual development of Italy since the Renaissance and its importance for contemporary Italian society. The Neorealist cinema, the key films of this movement, their narrative techniques and their critical reception. |
