| Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the study of Spanish politics and society from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970s and to develop essential writing skills in Spanish. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit students should be able to demonstrate: 1. an in-depth understanding of the political and social changes in Spain during the twentieth century; 2. knowledge of the key aspects of Spanish political and social development; 3. an ability to analyse historical processes and events. 4. an ability to express the above in Spanish. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Language skills and skills in effective learning are developed in this unit. Content: A chronological analysis of Spanish history since 1898 which examines issues including: the advent and decline of the Second Republic; the causes and course of the Spanish Civil War; the dictatorship of General Franco; the transition to democracy, the Socialist decade; and the rise (and fall) of the Partido Popular. Lectures will also cover some contemporary social issues such as immigration, regionalism and women. Seminars provide a forum for discussion and consolidation of lectures as well as providing a study skills session for note taking and essay writing. |
