| Description: | Aims: To build on the textual and cultural awareness acquired in Year 1 and to provide an overview of Italian cultural production in the early 20th Century. To develop students' skills in analysing and interpreting literary texts. Learning Outcomes: Learning objectives: at the end of the unit students will be able to: * produce a critical analysis of two major novels; * give an account of the major intellectual debates of the period. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit. Content: This core module will be based upon key examples of Italian 20th Century novel, poetry, and short story, from the primo Novecento to the Fascist period. Lectures and seminars will address literary as well as social/political developments, such as the Southern question, Fascism, and women's issues.
