Description: Aims:
The unit aims to develop students' understanding of why civil war broke out in Spain in 1936 and will examine related historical, political, social and issues, including a detailed consideration of the Second Republic. In addition to examining domestic factors, the unit aims to consider international aspects of the war, including the participation of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and the Soviet Union. The unit also aims to consider the cultural legacy of the Spanish Civil War, including its representation in the Spanish Cinema and Spanish culture more generally.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students should be in a position to place the Civil War in perspective, understand the reasons behind the failure of the Second Republic and engage with the issues raised by the Spanish Civil War, including the key role played by the conflict in Spain's subsequent development.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
Historical background; Second Republic; Civil War; Political and Cultural Legacy. Seminars provide a forum for student led-discussion, analysis and consolidation of the lectures. The unit is taught in Spanish.
