Description: | Aims & Learning Objectives: Aims: To develop an understanding of surrealism in relation to French art, culture and society; to explore the concept of surrealism as a revolutionary movement; to study the aims and achievements of this movement, through a wide variety of 'texts', including films, photographs, paintings and writings; to stimulate individual, creative responses. Learning Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: * demonstrate familiarity with the aims, history, and achievements of the surrealist movement; * situate the movement within a theoretical framework; * analyse a wide range of surrealist 'texts'; * trace the continuing influence of surrealism in contemporary culture; * develop and justify individual critical responses; * describe the relationship between form and content. Content: Topics for study include: surrealist literature, art, and film; Freud, dreams and the subconscious; theories and practice of play; Marx, communism and the surrealist revolution; the surrealist concept of metaphor; the relationship between language and image.Works to be studied include: Aragon, L.
