Description: Aims:
To think of national identity as the effect of the intersection of different cultural narratives; to understand those narratives in terms of other identity constituencies (gender, class, sexuality, etc); to trace the role of culture in the construction of national identity during Francoism and to explore the intervention of the State as well as the various responses of cultural practitioners.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
* explain the theoretical relevance of the concept of national identity;
* explain the role of literature and cinema in the construction of national identity;
* explain the intersection of national identity with other identity constituencies (gender, class, sexuality, etc);
* demonstrate an awareness of the complex negotiation between State promoted culture, other forms of cultural production and reception;
* describe the cultural history of Francoism in terms of the legitimation of and contestation to the State;
* demostrate relevant analytical skills to read a cultural text from this period.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
Theories of national identity and culture; State-sponsored cinema in the 40's (Raza, Los últimos de Filipinas); towards a criticial cinema in the 50's (Bienvenido Mr Marshall, Muerte de un ciclista); the postwar novel (Nada by Carmen Laforet, La colmena by Camilo José Cela, Entre visillos by Carmen Martín Gaite, etc); the New Spanish Cinema in the 60's; literature in the 60's Benet, Jaime Gil de Biedma, "Los novísimos"). The unit is taught in Spanish.
