Description: Aims:
1) To provide students with a detailed theoretical understanding of contemporary issues in Latin American visual culture.
2) To enable students to develop a critical/analytical approach to these issues through the examination of the work of various artists/directors.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students should have:
1) an in-depth understanding of the theoretical issues arising in the study of Latin American visual culture;
2) knowledge of key aspects of theories of the visual;
3) the ability to apply theoretical understanding to specific texts;
4) the ability to situate their analysis of Latin American film within an appropriate socio-historical context.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
Analysis of key movements and topics in Latin American visual arts to include cinema and political protest, as well as documentary, Colombian urban cinema, and women artists. Analysis of key theoretical perspectives on visual culture, both metropolitan and Latin American. The unit is taught in Latin American Spanish.
