Description: Aims:
* To further develop the skills of planning and presenting an independent research project.
* To prepare a research protocol suitable for completion as a doctoral level project.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Explore in depth the research design process, focusing specifically on the project chosen for their dissertation;
2. Complete a literature review and write a doctoral level research protocol;
3. Consider the ethical and governance issues and prepare, a research ethics proposal to a suitable and appropriate body (for example LREC, MREC) and the School Research Ethics Committee;
4. Complete at least one cycle of a personal development plan and identify goals in research and continuing professional development;
5. Reflect on own development as a researcher within the timeframe of the PDP cycle;
6. Present the outline of the research proposal to peers.
These learning outcomes will be taught, facilitated and assessed.

Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Refine and complete a research protocol suitable for undertaking as their doctoral project (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).
2. Search and critically appraise literature in a systematic manner. Apply results of their enquiry to the development of their research protocol (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
3. Identify the ethical approval processes required for research and initiated these in relation to their project. (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
4. Create and present a poster (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).

Content:
1. The content of this Unit will focus on any area of health or related research for which an adequate level of supervision can be offered.
2. Project design and management: refining a research question for primary research supported by a literature review, designing a protocol to completion, identifying ethical approval processes and starting application to these approving bodies, application of project management tools.
3. Presentation: display and defend developing research protocol as a poster to peers and as a substantial portfolio including completed research protocol, progress with ethical approval documents, reflective commentary, learning needs assessment and personal development plan.
