Description: Aims:
To introduce students to basic and advanced experimental techniques in aerodynamics/fluid mechanics.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit students should be able to:
* develop skills in planning experimental procedure, selecting experimental instrument and analysing;
* experimental results in experimental projects of aerodynamics/fluid mechanics.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; written communication; data acquisition, handling and analysis.

Content:
BASIC CONCEPTS of measurements and signal analysis in aerodynamics.
FLOW VISUALIZATION techniques: the principles and methods of generation.
PRESSURE MEASUREMENT techniques, including steady and unsteady measurements.
VOLUME FLOW AND VELOCITY measurement techniques
THERMAL ANEMOMETERS: hot wire and hot film sensing systems.
ADVANCED LASER MEASURING TECHNIQUES: laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), particle image velocimetry (PIV).
TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT techniques, including liquid crystal thermometer, thermocouples and cold wire sensing system.
