Description: Aims:
To provide the basic groundwork in instrumentation and data acquisition techniques and their application.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Describe the operation of various types of transducer and instrumentation system.
* Select suitable transducers, signal conditioning and data acquisition systems for a particular applicaiton.

Skills:
Laboratory skills, planning, problem solving, numeracy, written communication (taught and assessed), working independently.

Content:
Transducers for measuring strain, speed, force, torque, displacement, velocitym acceleration, fluid flow, temperature, pressure. Operational amplifiers, filters and signal conditioning, Interconnections and noise. Digital to analog converters, analog to digital converters, computer data acquisition systems. Practical applications in engineering systems relevant to individual MSc programmes.
