Description: Aims:
To introduce the principles involved in the formulation of medicinal products, and present the physical and chemical basis for formulation choices.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing this unit, students should demonstrate an ability to make initial rational choices about drug selection criteria and formulation decisions.

Skills:
Scientific and practical skills (T/F)
Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F)
Problem solving (T/F).

Content:
Requirements for pre-formulation studies. Influence of drug physicochemical properties on candidate drug selection. Influence of crystalline form, salt selection and polymorphism on solubility and dissolution. The stability of prepared pharmaceuticals. Rheological properties of pharmaceutical materials. Particle engineering and bulk properties of particles. Methods for evaluating physico-chemical properties for formulation development and product design. Pharmaceutical surfactants and polymers, their physical properties and their uses in formulation: liquids, solids and semi-solids; their characterisation and properties.
