Great Western Research funding opportunities
New GWR Theme in Information and Communication Technology
Great Western Research is pleased to announce that the existing GWR studentship scheme is to be extended to include a 6th theme for proposals, that of Information and Communication Technology. A launch event for businesses and academics involved in ICT is planned for the 25 September. In order to allow sufficient time for the forging of partnerships and the generation of joint research proposals in ICT the closing date for the third call for GWR studentships will be extended to noon on 14 January 2008 for all of the six theme areas.
Professor Peter Johnson (Dept. of Computer Science) is the ICT Theme Panel member for Bath.
University Support for GWR Studentship Applications
The University is making a strategic investment to encourage applications by providing financial support of up to 25% of the cost of a studentship in order to aid the development of new collaborations.
It has been agreed that the University should set aside a significant sum to help lever additional studentships out of the GWR scheme. As stated in the GWR terms:
You may wish to use University funds or funds from other organisations such as research councils, charities or HEFCE to contribute towards the cost of the studentship thereby either reducing the external partner contribution or creating a top-up. These supplementary contributions must not exceed 25% of the total project cost. Please note that you may not use SWRDA funds in this way.
As such there is now funding available that can be used to contribute towards this 25%. However, efforts should obviously still be made to maximise the level of external funding so that this sum can be used to support as many applications as possible.
Anybody wishing to commit funding from the University on an application must inform Richard Griffith (R.J.Griffith@bath.ac.uk) as early as possible in the application process and keep him informed of progress up to the point of application.
Hopefully this new initiative will make GWR studentships significantly more attractive to both academics and external collaborators, particularly SMEs.
Third Call for Studentships
The Third call for studentship applications will close on 14 January 2008, for all six themes.
There are still 50 studentships available for projects with commercial external partners across the six theme areas of Applied Mathematics; Sustainability; Materials; Psychology; Creative Arts; and ICT.
Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis by the Theme Panels and the Regional Research Board based on an 8 week cycle. Thus applicants should under normal circumstances receive a decision on their application within 8 - 9 weeks of submission to GWR.
Please note that some elements of the theme descriptions and external funding requirements have been relaxed. So if you think you have a project that might fit it is well worth taking a look.
To date, Bath has been awarded 15 studentships and 4 Fellowships as lead partner and more than £360,000 from GWR for the creation of a postgraduate training site.
