AR30039 History & theory of architecture 4

Credits: 6
Level: Honours
Semester: 1
Assessment: ES 100%
Requisites:
Aims: To extend further students' ability to research a discrete aspect of architectural history and/or theory, and to present their findings cogently and coherently. To provide a review of critical bodies of architectural and urban theory congruent to the themes of the parallel studio.
Learning Outcomes:
Students' achievement of these aims will be assessed on the basis of a substantial written, illustrated and fully referenced text. The form of illustration, and the balance between illustration and words, in both quantity and relative importance, will vary according to the subject. The students will utilise a major architectural theme in their final paper which will not exceed 2,500 words. The paper will demonstrate the ability to formulate judgements about the spatial, aesthetic and social qualities of individual buildings in the light of analysis of assigned texts and lecture topics. Students will research one architectural topic appropriate to their interests and present a final paper that demonstrates a structural argument and is complete with full bibliographic references.
Skills:
Whatever the subject, the skills to be demonstrated are: 1; research; 2; critical analysis; and 3; lucid verbal and/or visual exposition. Research, part guided, part independent; presenting arguments coherently in written English.
Content:
At least five lectures plus five seminars, or equivalent combination. These will address a defined area of architectural history and/or theory, and be supported by a detailed brief and accompanying reader. Eight lectures which focus on the development of salient debates of the last forty years. The course will also focus on a series of reading material made available in the form of a course reader.
