BB30052 Scientific communication

Credits: 6
Level: Honours
Semester: 2
Assessment: CW 100%
Requisites:

Aims & Learning Objectives:
To examine good and bad practice in communicating science to a variety of professional and lay audiences using written, visual and oral methods. After taking this course the student should be able to:
* communicate new findings in biochemistry to professional, student and lay audiences.
Content:
Students will design an 'activity' that would convey some aspect of biochemistry to a lay audience such as might be present at a 'Bath taps into science' event, write a 1,000 word article for publication in the science section of a broadsheet national newspaper and give a short "journal club" oral presentation explaining a recent biochemical paper to a general scientific audience. The presentation should summarise the paper and its significance and should critically evaluate the methods used, the results obtained and their interpretation. The topics communicated will be of general interest.
