Requisites:
Aims: To trace the most important political, social and economic developments in inter-war Germany and Austria; practice in German reading and comprehension.
Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete this unit successfully will be able to follow lectures providing an overview of this period and take notes from them; read and discuss short texts in German; understand vocabulary and concepts relevant to the history of the period; make oral presentations in a seminar context; write short essays under exam conditions.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, basic communication in German, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

i. Overview of German history up to 1918
ii. The Weimar Republic (1918-1933)
a) The Weimar constitution, political and economic crises of the early years
b) Economic collapse, political radicalisation and the rise of Hitler
iii. The Third Reich (1933-1945)
a) Propaganda in the totalitarian state
b) War, resistance and the Holocaust
iv. Austria (1918-1945)
From the end of the monarchy to the Anschluss: The first Austrian Republic.
