Requisites:
Aims: To trace the most important political, social and economic developments of the period 1945 to 1961; to provide practice in German reading and comprehension; to develop oral and written communication skills in German.
Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete this unit successfully will be able to follow lectures providing an overview of this period and take notes from them; read and discuss documentary texts in German; understand vocabulary and concepts relevant to the history of this period; make oral presentations in a seminar context; write short textual analyses in German.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

a) Ideology of antifascism; planned economy; rising of 17 June 1953
b) Society and economy in the 1950s; crisis and building of Berlin Wall
iii. Austria
Austria under Allied Control; the Zweite Republik and the politics of neutrality.
