EU20556 Spanish cultural studies 2A: the Spanish avant-garde

Requisites:
Aims: To build on EU10552 and EU10553 in developing a theoretical framework for cultural analysis; to understand culture as a wide range of discursive practices; to understand culture as a site for the struggle over meaning and identity; to apply this conceptual paradigm to the case of Spanish avant-garde culture; to assess the relevance of Latin American influence on Spanish avant-garde literature.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
* argue how a cultural text or practice works;
* analyse a cultural text in terms of the construction of national, ethnic, gender or class narratives;
* understand and discuss the cultural elements at stake in Spanish and Latin American Modernity.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Language skills and skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.
Content:
Cultural analysis, theoretically informed, of different practices and discourses in Contemporary Spain and Latin America. Principal themes to be considered include Spanish and Latin American avant-garde in literature and visual culture: Vicente Huidobro, César Vallejo, Federico García Lorca, Rosa Chacel Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, Vicente Aleixandre, Maruja Mallo, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Luis Buñuel. The unit is taught in Spanish.
