Requisites:
Aims: 1. To provide students with a detailed theoretical and empirical understanding of contemporary history, politics and society of the South American Cone countries.
2. To enable students to develop a critical/analytical approach to these issues through the examination of case studies, which include analysis of political, social and cultural developments.
3. To build upon the political, social, cultural and economic issues raised in previous units during Semester One, and apply them to contemporary political developments within Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students should be able to demonstrate:
1. In-depth understanding of the political, economic and social situation, and its evolution, in the South American Cone since 1945.
2. Knowledge of the key aspects of contemporary political, economic and social issues in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
3. The ability to apply theoretical understanding to specific case studies.
4. An understanding of the links between political, social and economic issues, and the ability to make comparisons between different countries.
5. An ability to respond in an informed manner to questions about these different issues and how they relate to each other.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis and conceptual thinking. Exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and effective communication in the target language. Teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are also developed and assessed in this unit.
Content:
Analysis of the historical, political and social key issues in contemporary Argentina, Chile and Brazil, with a comparative reference to each other and to other smaller countries in the South American Cone. Seminars provide a forum for student-led analysis of case studies, discussion and consolidation of the lectures. The unit is taught in Spanish.
