Aims & Learning Objectives:
To provide an understanding of the epidemiology and natural history of upper limb pain in a primary care setting.
After taking this unit, the student should be able to:
Undertake an evaluation of a patient presenting with pain to the upper limb. Examine all regions of the upper limb in the assessment of the patient. Evaluate the evidence base for the management of upper limb pain and be able to select an appropriate treatment plan for a patient.
Content:
* Structure and function of the shoulder, outlining an appropriate examination approach in primary care;
* Specific elbow problems frequently encountered in general practice;
* General work or sports-related problems of the upper limb and overuse syndromes, e.g. RSI and work-related upper limb disorders;
* Joint injection techniques.
