Aims:
* To extend the students' knowledge in the field of vibrations by teaching the subject entirely in the French language and to consolidate the students understanding of the French notation and mathematical methods for problem solving. * To review the knowledge of mechanical vibrations with one degree of freedom and to extend to multi-degrees of freedom and continuous systems. * Introduction in finite element analysis. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Derive the equation of motion of vibrating systems by using vector or analytical methods. * Calculate or approximate the natural frequency of conservative and dissipative mechanical systems. * Describe possible mode shapes of mechanical systems by using matrix methods. * Formulate mass, damping and stiffness matrices. * Produce simplified finite element formulations. * Reason out and discuss in the language any problems encountered by the course. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; French language. Content: Review of one degree of freedom vibration systems. Vibrations in multi-degree of freedom systems. Vibrations of linear elastic continuum. Approximation methods. Introduction to finite element analysis. Topics for self study that could be examined. |
