MN10079 The UK macroeconomic environment

Aims: This course aims to develop students' understanding of the economic and industrial environment of the UK since World War II. Students will apply the lessons learned as they analyse current events. This unit also aims to integrate common uses of personal computing software and quantitative skills into the assessment of the module, thus building on the foundation built in Quantitative Methods & Personal Computing.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit, students will have:
* The ability to define, compare and interpret macroeconomic statistics.
* Knowledge of the structure of the UK economy as a whole.
* Facility with simple macroeconomic analytical tools.
* Integrated previously-assessed competences in a set of commonly-used software applications into an academic assessment.

Content:
Topics will include: the UK economy as a whole, including GDP, demand management, regional inequalities and development; monetary, credit and fiscal policies; foreign trade and the balance of payments; labour and unemployment.
