Requisites:
Aims: To understand the differences, similarities, causes and effects of business dynamics in China and Japan.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit, candidates should be able to understand the nature of both domestic and international business in relation to China and Japan, including:
(i) The structure of industries and competition in each country
(ii) The competitive advantages and disadvantages of each country
(iii) The institutional and systemic underpinnings of business structures and methods in each country
(iv) The firm-level strategic implications for both domestic and international companies of the evolving business environments in each country.
Skills:
Intellectual ability to (i) compare and contrast dynamic business environments across nations, to (ii) analyse and interpret data to draw logical conclusions across a range of variables relating to business and China and Japan, to (iii) synthesise theories and models as they apply to the changing Chinese and Japanese business landscapes in an international competitive context. Practical ability to assess the dynamic effects of China and Japan on domestic and international firms.
Content:
The unit will cover the following broad areas:
(i) The evolution and prospective trajectories of Chinese and Japanese business and industry structures
(ii) Myths and realities of Japanese and Chinese economic and managerial miracles
(iii) The effect of Japan and China on each others business environments
(iv) The effect of, respectively, Japanese and Chinese business on the global business environment more generally
(v) The effect of Japan and China on foreign firms by sector and strategic type
(vi) The locational competitiveness of China and Japan for foreign firms' direct investment.
