Requisites:
Aims: To help students as potential managers to appreciate the value of management research in decision making, to judge the value of other peoples' research efforts, and to plan and execute their own research.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* define and answer a research question in a chosen area of interest related to development
* undertake a literature review
* choose between methodologies to select the one most appropriate for a research question
* choose suitable qualitative and quantitative methods for a research project
* evaluate and understand the ethical implications of their chosen research path.
Skills:

* Comprehensive and scholarly written communication (e.g. essays) (Taught/Facilitated).
* Ability to select, summarise and synthesise written information from multiple sources (T/F/A).
* Ability to formulate a research question (T/F/A).
* Ability to analyse quantitative and qualitative data (T/F/A).
* Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines (T/F).
* Ability to assess the significance of ethical issues associated with their research.
Content:
The nature and scope of management research, secondary data, sampling issues, ethical issues in management research, primary data collection techniques, the questionnaire, the purpose of qualitative research, qualitative techniques, quantitative and qualitative data analysis and the presentation of research findings.
