Aims: Managing in contemporary environments calls for an understanding of external forces that impact on private sector and public organisations. Using mainly economic perspectives, the unit aims to explore key themes such as: competitive analysis; the regulation of industry; the globalisation of the world economy; and business and society.
Learning Outcomes:
This unit will enable students to:
* Use economic tools to analyse competitive conditions.
* Apply a framework for understanding the competitive environment
* Be aware of mechanisms for influencing and responding to the competitive environment.
* Become aware of the key contextual forces that impact on organisations
* Understand the links between business and society
* Understand the impact of issues such as corporate social responsibility, business ethics and globalisation.
* Develop a platform for debate throughout the length of the degree.

Content:
This unit will include some of the following topics:
* Key economic concepts and frameworks to understand the specific market/industrial environments in which firms operate and evolve.
* The regulation of business, with specific reference to competition policy.
* The institutions of international economic governance.
* Business relations with societal stakeholders.
