Requisites:
This unit is only available to students on the MSc in Advanced Management Practice.
Aims: Enable students to gain more clarity about objectively and subjectively meaningful career investments particularly in the context of new organizational forms where inter-disciplinary project based working is widespread. The pragmatic focus is for students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in preparation for recruitment by employers for the Period of Professional Practice and beyond. The delivery is based on contemporary career theory with its emphasis on individuals taking responsibility for their professional development and adaptability.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop knowledge and understanding of career theories; be able to identify key issues and analyse these critically; gain ideas and approaches to reflect on their own life and career choices. Through a range of activities and assignments, students will explore individually and with others how they can bring skills and expertise (knowing how), relationships (knowing whom), and values (knowing why) to their working life in and through organizations. Activities include: Initiating a Learning Contract including a Learning Needs Analysis and a Personal Development Plan (which will explicitly draw on relevant career theory); Understanding the role of Professional Practice within the design of the programme; gaining knowledge of relevant quality standards and expectations; developing kills and knowledge relevant to graduate level job search process.

Content:
The meaning of traditional and 'boundaryless' career perspectives within the changing context of work in a knowledge-oriented global economy where inter-disciplinary project based work is often vital. From occupational choice to career investments. Identity-based learning and adaptability. Activities include: Career-orientation assessment; Developmental Network Analysis; Learning Contract including the Learning Needs Analysis and the Personal Development Plan; CV Writing, Covering Letters and Application Forms, Interview Skills, Mock Interview Preparation Session.
