Level: Intermediate
Semester: 1
Assessment: EX 80%, PR 20%
Requisites:
Before taking this unit you must take AR10311
Aims: To give students a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
* analyse flows in a network of pipes;
* Understand and be able to apply dimensional analysis;
* demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the design of a range of open channel hydraulic structures.
Skills:
Intellectual skills
* Ability to apply the concepts and principles of fluid mechanics to the solution of engineering problems.
* To understand taught material.
Professional/Practical skills
* To deal with more advanced fluid mechanics engineering issues in a systematic yet creative way, and to communicate the conclusions clearly.
Transferable/key skills
* Ability to collect, analyse, synthesise and present technical information. To demonstrate communication and team working skills.
Content:
Pipe flow, Pipe Networks, branched pipes, Dimensional Analysis
Basic Open channel flow: normal flow, critical flow, Froude Number, surges, hydraulic jump.
