Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this Unit, students will be able to make a coherent presentation through a written illustrated report on the urban form of, and the theoretical ideas that underly, significant projects within the urban realm. This research work may relate to the city and site in which their design project work is set.
Skills:
Research, writing, written and visual presentation of report.
Content:
The unit introduces the ideas and ideals that have shaped European cities with a particular emphasis on tropes and disciplinary traditions that have acted thematically on the design and development of cities over time. The second part of the unit is an assessment by students in small groups of the work of particular urban designers or theorists, or of particular parts of an historic city, in relation to these themes. Presentations may be made using a range of analytical techniques - drawings, photographs, physical and computer models - in order to define the architectural character and quality of the area or project under study in relation to the whole theme studied during the course. The material gathered will be analysed and presented in illustrated reports in a format to be determined by the examiner.
