Aims: To extend understanding of, and further knowledge in one particular topic of structural or environmental engineering chosen by the student.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, the successful student will be able to report on state of the art knowledge on a specific topic and propose possible lines of academic research in that area. The student will also be able to demonstrate:
* a systematic understanding of this knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of this area of professional practice; and,
* conceptual understanding that enables the student to evaluate critically current practice and new developments, and propose new solutions.

Content:
A work of research presented as a short report, normally entailing analytical or numerical modelling or design developments in either field of environmental, structural or civil engineering, or areas of interaction of these disciplines. The student will report on state of the art knowledge by studying relevant literature, define the conditions for and attempt the application to a specific problem, and succinctly report on the results obtained, identifying avenues for further development.
