AR50353 Building energy management systems and IT

Credits: 6
Level: Masters
Modular: no specific semester
Assessment: EX60CW40
Requisites:
Before taking this unit you must take AR50346 and take AR50347 and take AR50348 and take AR50349 and take AR50350 and take AR50351
Aims: To impart a comprehensive understanding of the current range of advanced control systems implemented in buildings, strategies for their deployment and algorithms for their use.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will have demonstrated an advanced understanding of the range of technologies for the control of heating/ cooling/ ventilation/ lighting and other ancillary building systems. They will be able to critically select suitable solutions for application in complex building projects, specify control functions and algorithms and systematically analyse building energy performance.
Skills:
Appropriate analytical skills for the application of BEMS in different types of buildings. These skills are facilitated and assessed.
Content:
Basis of building controls: Comfort, Energy Conservation and Maintenance. Human interaction with control systems.
Control theory: Principles of Hydraulic, HVAC & Lighting system controls. Sensors & Actuators. Plant Control. Control systems & communications.
Monitoring & targeting: Metering strategies, extracting and analysing data, benchmarking and building energy conservation
BEMS to control facades
Use of BEMS to control local generation of power.
