Aims: (to enable the students to)
* explore and understand the integrated nature of development and learning in very young children; * recognise the importance of observation in the early years setting or work place; * be able to use the findings of observations to inform planning, other practitioners, families and other professionals. Learning Outcomes: (the student will be able to) * demonstrate and apply the physical and health care needs of children in the early years setting; * demonstrate a good understanding of the context of development and learning of young children; * identify and demonstrate an understanding of the adult's role in providing for and promoting appropriate opportunities for children's development and learning. Skills: Communicating ideas, arguments, principles and theories, reflective practice, observation, recording, handling information appropriately. Content: * This unit will draw on a range of theorists and theories including nature versus nurture and frameworks for cognitive development, including early language development. * The importance of, and process for, observing babies and children in order to assess and evaluate their learning and development will be explored. * The key physical care and health needs of children will be identified. * Social and emotional development will be identified and the factors which influence and affect the child's development and learning will be considered, for example, cultural factors, economic factors, environmental, family lifestyles, values and beliefs. The role of the adult, resources and the environment in relation to learning opportunities will be looked at. |
