Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit the learner will be able to:
* Identify, analyse and apply theoretical concepts related to early literacy development.
* Understand and apply the principles of how children learn to speak, read and write.
* Determine the additional requirements when planning a curriculum for children whose first language is not English.
* Devise and adopt differentiated materials, resources and strategies to encourage all children's literacy skills.
* Apply the National requirements for children's literacy, devising assessments and assessment systems, which reflect the expected outcomes for literacy development.
Skills:
The professional practice for this unit is that the learner must demonstrate whilst working as a Senior Practitioner tat they can:
* Apply own literacy skills
* Plan literacy sessions
* Support children's progress and development in literacy
Content:
1. Significant and emerging theories and principles of:
a) how early literacy develops and how and why such development can be positively and negatively affected by children's physical, intellectual, emotional and social development
b) how children learn to speak, read and write
c) second and subsequent language acquisition
d) the assessment of children's literacy
e) the nature and role of literacy and its place within the curriculum
f) the principles of inclusive education
g) legislation and regulations about equal opportunities and antidiscrimination.
2. Methods, techniques and processes relating to:
a) supporting children's literacy development, including:
* ensuring progression
* developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing at word level, sentence level and whole text level
b) how young children's literacy can be developed through play
c) assessment and assessment systems related to literacy
d) working and interacting with children, parents, other adults and professionals to improve children's literacy
e) differentiation in literacy
f) the implementation of legislation and regulations about equal opportunities and anti-discrimination
g) the evaluation of the effects of self on practice and the children
h) record keeping and reporting procedures for literacy.
3. Information and facts about:
a) national programmes, requirements, strategies and expected outcomes in literacy for children within the learner's area of responsibility
b) how ICT can support the teacher/Early Years worker and children to enhance their learning of literacy
c) child welfare legislation, regulations, requirements and guidance regarding the teaching of literacy
d) the potential effect of the learner's own attitudes, values, behaviour on work with children, parents, colleagues within the organisation and those with whom they need to work from outside the organisation
e) the legislation, regulations and guidance about equal opportunities and anti-discrimination
f) data protection and confidentiality and security of information.
