Requisites:
Aims: The aims of this unit are to:
* enable identification of key components that can be used in the management of public access on heritage sites in rural and urban settings.
* enable identification and classification of visitor groups and parties according to aspirations, interests and needs.
* enable acquisition of appropriate skills for the management of established sites and new visitor projects/developments.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
* research and identify knowledge, skills and strategies to layout and manage public access in a manner that reflects the significance of heritage sites and the needs of individuals and groups.
* identify site requirements for sympathetic and sustainable management.
* carry out market research to identify the local, regional and national customer base.
* networking skills and establishing links with other appropriate local and regional visitor attractions.
* develop publicity strategies and materials and practical skills for the promotion of sites, projects and special events.

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* integral qualities of existing sites of natural or historical heritage, e.g. nature reserve, landscape geomorphology or industrial heritage.
* communicating and interacting with the public to uncover, identify and understand the aspirations and needs of consumer groups, including people with special needs, impairments and disabilities.
* planning, executing and interpreting market research exercises using skills acquired in complimentary modules.
* interpretation of existing plans and strategies for site management and identification of appropriate changes to respond to market trends.
* Health and Safety regulations that relate to heritage sites, including, health and safety at work, RIDDOR, public liability and action to be taken in the case of difficulties and incidents of contingencies that may be encountered, including meeting needs of non-English speakers.
* using knowledge acquired in the Environmental Education unit to develop publicity strategies for visitor management.
