AS30236 Working with children: principles of professional practice

Requisites:
Aims: To enable learners to provide evidence that will demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of their own practice that informs their leadership of others in working with children. Those working with children 0-5 may also use this as evidence for assessment in order to gain the Early Years Professional Status for Effective Practice after completing their Honours Degree. If so, they must show that they are working at Level 6 with Children 0-5 and to meet the relevant EYPS Standards.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit the learner will be able to:
* Provide evidence of skills to lead and support others in the delivery of the curricula for the Foundation Stage and beyond.
* Provide evidence of skills to lead and support others in their relationships with children and in managing transitions.
* Describe, analyse and evaluate how national practice standards are applied to ensure children and professionals are supported. This will include evaluation of the statutory and non-statutory frameworks for children's settings & services.
* Reflect on how the relevant practice standards impact on their work role.
* Critically assess the implications of the relevant practice standards for the setting.
Skills:
Intellectual skills: The student will show that they can:
* Critically analyse the principles and content of relevant curricula and how these influence the diverse ways in which children develop and learn from birth to the end of the Foundation Stage and thereafter;
* Evaluate the statutory and non-statutory frameworks and current legal requirements and their implications for Early Years settings.
* Reflect upon the practitioners' expectations of children to ensure they achieve their full potential.
Professional & Practical skills: With reference to the relevant practice standards learners must demonstrate how they would:
* Establish constructive relationships with children
* Communicate effectively with children in the setting
* Value and respect the views of all children
* Support children's development relating to external influences and periods of transition
* Establish and maintain relationships with other professionals to support children's well-being, development, and learning
Key skills: Demonstrate effective communication skills when working with children, colleagues, parents and professionals from outside agencies. Apply basic ICT skills, manage time effectively, construct a suitable assignment following assignment guidelines.
Content:
This unit will demonstrate that through their practice, learners meet the relevant practice standards to include:
* The principles and content of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how to put them into practice
* The individual and diverse ways in which children develop and learn from birth to the end of the Foundation Stage and thereafter
* How children's well-being, development, learning and behaviour can be affected by a range of influences and transitions from inside and outside the setting
* The main provisions of the national and local statutory and non-statutory frameworks within which children's services work and their implications for Early Years settings
* The current legal requirements, national policies and guidelines on health and safety, safeguarding and promoting the well-being of children and their implications for Early Years settings
* The contribution that other professionals within the setting and beyond can make to the children's physical and emotional well-being, development and learning
* Why it is important for professionals to have high expectations of all children and commitment to ensuring that they can achieve their full potential
* How to establish fair, respectful, trusting, supportive and constructive relationships with children
* Ways to communicate sensitively and effectively with children of all ages
* Why it is important for professionals to listen to children, pay attention to what they say and valuue and respect their views
* How to demonstrate the positive values, attitudes and behaviour they expect from children
