Requisites:
Aims: The intention of this unit is to:
* provide students with an introduction to the degree and to the nature of research in education and development (in relation to the work of the two departments at the University of Bath);
* introduce the students to the relationship between education and policy-making at the national and international level;
* equip students with a contextual understanding of the institutional, cultural, economic and political dimensions of globalisation.
Learning Outcomes:
In completing this unit students would be expected to:
* have an increased awareness of the key institutions, policies, issues and debates associated with education and development in a global context;
* recognise the work and theories of those specifically looking at the interrelationship between education, globalisation and development;
* begin to develop a conceptual language and definition bank for discussing, debating and writing about the key issues covered in this unit.

Content:
The following topics will be covered:
1) Key definitions and relationships: defining globalisation and nation state; defining education and development separately and in relation to one another;
2) Knowledge, skills and the economy: introducing the role of the human in the economy; the changing dynamics of technology and migration; and theories and terms such as the knowledge economy, human capital theory, and modernisation;
3) Introducing the role of the citizen and his/her education in the building and democratisation of a county.
4) Introducing issues of educational equality and quality in a globalising context;
5) Defining, making and analysing policy: introducing policy analysis and the relationship between (a) key institutions (e.g. government, OECD) and policy at a global level, and (b) education practice at a national level and its local implementation and interpretation.
