ED10355 Research design for the social sciences

Requisites:
Aims: To intention of this unit is to:
* introduce students to critical social science research;
* develop students' awareness of the philosophy of research;
* provide students with a conceptual overview of study skills required for their degree programme;
* introduce students to the politics of research.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students will:
* Have an understanding of how the peer-review process works.
* Appreciate the various theoretical 'lenses' used in the sport sciences.
* Understand the origins of social science research and the various schools of thought.
Skills:

* Production of concise, scholarly, written communication to agreed specifications and deadlines. F/A

Content:
The following topics will be covered:
1) Axiology: Overview of research ethics and procedures.
2) Politics: Discussion of the politics of doing research and the context of doing research within the conjunctural moment. This will highlight the major schools of critical academic thought; thus, helping students appreciate the diversity of theoretical considerations in contemporary social science approaches to sport.
3) Philosophy: Introduction to ontological and epistemological approaches to social science research; consideration of judging research.
4) Practices: An introduction to the variety of research practices and methods.
