Requisites:
Aims: This unit will focus on the development of applied theoretical knowledge and safe practical skills in the area of athletic training.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this unit, students will:
* develop a broad and detailed knowledge of a range of training techniques both specific and generic.
* develop an understanding of how the respiratory, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems respond to exercise.
* understand how, when and why such training techniques should be applied.
* be able to prescribe exercise and training programmes for a variety of clients/performers.
* be able to critically assess a number of training strategies currently used.

* Develop and apply the skills needed for academic study and enquiry T/A
* Synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding of theory and practice of fitness training T/A

Content:
1. Principles of training programmes:
* principles of training, specificity, overload, progression, long term planning and periodisation
* frequency, intensity, time and type
* recovery, adaptation and regression.
2. Body system response to training:
* musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems.
3. Range of training techniques:
generic:
* resistance training (isometric, isotonic, isokinetic), fixed resistance and free weight, core stability flexibility (active, passive, ballistic, static, proprioceptive neuro muscular facilitation), plyometric, cardio-vascular (mechanically aided, group and independent) continuous, interval, fartlek, circuit training.
specific:
* sport, event, position specific training, skill related fitness.
