Requisites:
Aims:
* To prepare students to conduct theoretically informed research in sport, and coaching and physical activity
* To engage students in the critical examination of contemporary social theory related to sport, coaching and physical activity
* To link students' personal research interests with a theoretical analysis of sport, coaching and fitness.
Learning Outcomes:
Having studied this unit, students will be able to:
* Understand how research ontology, epistemology and methodology shape the sociological study of sport,
* Understand the meaning of contemporary social theory as an analytical tool for qualitative social science research
* Begin to formulate their own theoretical approach to studying sport, coaching and physical activity to enhance their professional practice.

Content:
In this unit, students will critically analyse contemporary sport, coaching and physical research that is informed by theoretical foundations in cultural studies, poststructuralism and postmodernism. The unit will cover the following areas:
* Contemporary ways of thinking about and theorising sport, coaching and physical activity
* The socio-cultural contexts of sport, coaching and physical activity
* The contouring, regulation and governance of $ùperformative&© sporting bodies and abject bodies.
