Requisites:
Aims: The aim of the unit is to critically analyse an extended period of professional practice in education.
Learning Outcomes:
Having studied this unit, students will be able to:
* Analyse different theoretical perspectives on their professional practice in education;
* Critically analyse their professional practice in education and its development over an extended period in relation to the relevant literature;
* Demonstrate how their practice over an extended period has enabled the learning of others;
* Collect, analyse and interpret data in order to make informed judgements about the appropriateness of their practice;
* Evaluate their professional practice in enabling the learning of others;
* Analyse the nature and significance of evidence that relates to their practice;
* Synthesise and reflect on a plan of professional development that meets their own development needs and the development requirements of their institution;
* Demonstrate self-direction and creativity in solving problems related to their professional work;

Content:
Participants will be required to create a portfolio of evidence which will provide a record of their professional practice and development over an extended period (between 6 and 12 months). The portfolio will contain a range of material such as records of teaching experience, reflections and evaluations; accounts of critical incidents; reflections upon particular professional development activities; and case studies of their professional work with particular individual learners and groups of learners. The portfolio will provide evidence which the student will critically analyse in their assignment. A range of aspects of professional practice will be analysed. The portfolio itself will not be assessed but will be submitted with the assignment. The unit will address the following areas:
* Good practice in supporting learning and its application to professional practice;
* Relevant educational theories relating to learning, learning in work groups, curriculum, assessment and models of professional learning;
* The use and appropriate management of portfolios in professional learning.
